Women from Around the World Meet in Istanbul to Discuss Their Role in Sustainable Development

CFUW Leads Largest Canadian Delegation Ever at IFUW Triennial Conference

(OTTAWA – August 16, 2013) – Women from around the world are gathering in Istanbul, Turkey from August 16-21, 2013 for the International Federation of University Women (IFUW) Conference on women’s role in achieving a sustainable future: education, urbanization, violence and human rights. The Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) will have its largest-ever delegation at the conference.

The IFUW Conference provides an opportunity for members from over 60 national federations and associations to meet and share their experiences while participating in a timely programme of workshops, seminars, and keynote speaker on various issues affecting women and their roles in creating a sustainable future.

CFUW delegates will play a large role in the conference by hosting a number of workshops on addressing barriers to education for Afghan girls,  and the Genderization of the Convention against Torture (CAT), particularly torture committed by non-state actors. One of the CFUW delegates, Susan Russell, will also convene the plenary session on Sustaining women’s health: the Right to Access to Quality Care.

Delegates of the conference will also make important policy decisions about the future direction of IFUW and will select a new President and Board of Directors.

CFUW is a non-partisan, voluntary, self-funded organization of 9,000 women. These women are members of over 100 CFUW Clubs located in every province across Canada. Since its founding in 1919, CFUW has been working to improve the status of women, and to promote human rights, public education, social justice, and peace. CFUW is the largest of the 61 affiliates of the International Federation of University Women (IFUW), a leading girls’ and women’s global organization run by and for women, advocating for women’s rights, equality and empowerment through access to quality education and training.
